Mickey Thompson tires was founded in 1963 by the legendary Mickey Thompson and his friend, Gene McMannis. Born on December 7, 1928, Thompson was always mechanically inclined. Mickey Thompson had rebuilt several cars before he was even old enough to drive, and bought his first car around the age of 14. Thompson was devoted to racing and building cars to race, and today his son, Danny, is continuing on in his father's footsteps. The legend of McMannis and Thompson remains the backbone of the company to this day – to design, manufacture, and test high performance tires.

Mickey Thompson tires began with the development of a new open-wheel racing tire that gave racers a low center of gravity with its softer compound and lower profile. The next year, Mickey Thompson became the first tire manufacturer to offer the "Indy Profile" tires. Mickey Thompson tires has championed many "firsts" since their beginning in 1963, including wide, low street tires, and rugged, aggressive off-road tires.

Around the turn of the twenty-first century, product development continued into a full range of wheels.
