Helping his son learn to ride a tricycle, Dunlop found the solid rubber tires on his son's tricycle did not give way to the ground and obstacles that might arise in his path. Establishing a commercial presence as Dunlop Pneumatic Tire Co. Ltd in 1890, Dunlop opened his first plant in Dublin, Ireland with success he could have never imagined. By the turn of the century, Dunlop had nearly quadrupled in size and was quickly outgrowing their original base. In 1902 the company acquired a 400 acre location in Birmingham, England later to be known as Fort Dunlop.
